On average, I upload two new videos per week. The majority of my videos demonstrate tips for getting the most out of MS Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) I also include video tips for running productive meetings, setting goals, and other topics related to Business Communications.

How Do You Respond When Equipment Fails During a Presentation?

Equipment will fail. Your Laptop will display the “Blue Screen of Death.” The Bulb in your Projector will suddenly “Pop!” You will:

  • Forget to pack your Power Cord
  • Bring the wrong PowerPoint Presentation
  • Trip over a Power Cord and …

It is not a question of IF; it is a question of WHEN. When your equipment fails, how will you respond? What will you do? How will you recover?

This question was posed on one of the LinkedIn Groups that I belong to – “Great Communicators! Effective Presenting & PowerPoint.” I posted my thoughts – including my own list of what to bring whenever I travel to make a presentation. Geetesh Bajaj, a Microsoft MVP for PowerPoint liked my response and he turned it into an article on his blog. Prepare your presentation. Prepare yourself. Prepare your recovery from an equipment failure. Expect the unexpected!

Cast Roles for Effective Meetings

One way to ensure full and balanced participation in your meetings is to “cast the roles” that each participant plays during the meeting. Want to minimize the disruption of “agenda hijackers?” Assign specific roles for each participant. Want to maximize participation? Limit your meeting invitations to the people who have been cast to play a specific role in helping you to accomplish the purpose of your meeting.

In this video, I detail the roles and responsibilities for each of these “cast members:” Leader, Facilitator, Recorder, Timekeeper, Parking Lot Manager, Subject Matter Experts, Stakeholders, and Devil’s Advocate. In my experience I have found that when you help people to understand the role that they need to perform, you improve their performance.

How to Lead a Meeting People Enjoy Attending

Don’t laugh, you can learn how to lead meetings that people really look forward to attending!

Successful meetings follow a process. In this video you will learn the three-step process for successful meetings:

  1. Prepare for the Meeting – Determine the purpose for the meeting and prepare an action agenda and invite the proper participants to the meeting.
  2. Run the meeting skillfully – Run the meeting in support of the action agenda and ensure full participation for each person invited to the meeting.
  3. Follow-up – Assign roles and responsibilities during the meeting. Ensure acceptance of these assignment. You are already preparing for your next meeting – to follow-up on the decisions and information from this meeting.
